Those characters are coming from the same MAP04.SPG file. Don't pay attention the japanese characters,and look at the hex directly. I'm guessing the pointer is wrong somehow? Well,I haven't really looked at the SPG files,but there quite a few NPC names in the SDT files as well.

Say this one for example,I inserted it manually on MAP05.SDT. These files are uncompressed,so you can just edit the KLB files directly.

For the names on MAPxx.SDT they all seem to use 14 bytes+2 bytes for the string terminator.

Tracing this game's code is truly a challenge,having being programmed in C instead of ASM,the compiler really generates different ASM than a human programmer.
