Re: How to Compile from Source?

Well, besides the fact that there is a 2013 version in Romhacking.net,the license says the following: Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, includi...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

https://vid.me/e/wJWe/ I think this should be good enough? I also found out how to speed up the text scroll speed if it's necessary. The file containing the opening text used the complex flag compression, but I managed to insert it in the game by faking the simple compression. Seems the code is able...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

I'll try to limit the OP's lines to 36 characters (to have 3 characters margin) for now. Edit: Okay, that's a no go without completely butchering the text. 39 characters is really the limit? I'm thinking a few alternatives, although I have no idea how hard to implement they will be: 1)Use a smaller ...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

It's great to hear that Ys 2 Special may happen sometime. As for ASCII text on the opening,I managed to get it working.I can't believe I didn't think of editing the savestates directly before,it's a lot faster to do it this way, luckily there was some unused memory area where I could insert the ASCII...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

There's another compression in there somewhere that's more complicated. I heard it called FALCOM2 somewhere else. Not sure where that name came from. Anyway, it's "the one with the flag bits." That's the first one I found in Brandish 3. I made my own decompressor for both formats based on the actua...

Re: How to Compile from Source?

That seems to be a Visual Studio 2015 project. You can download the Community version for free here: https://www.visualstudio.com/post-download-vs?sku=community&clcid=0x409 Just be careful to select C++ on install,it isn't selected by default. If there are no dependencies problems, you should be able...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

Oops,I really did misread that, sorry about that. So ASCII text is usable without any additional hacking? Most of my research was on Brandish 3,and I couldn't print ASCII text at all, much like in the opening, and here I thought I had made an interesting breakthrough...*sigh*. l By the way,do you any o...

PC98 I/O ports information (Japanese)
http://www.webtech.co.jp/company/doc/undocumented_mem/

I just stumbled upon this.As I don't really speak japanese,I can't understand much of that, but it seems a valuable resource for PC98 assembler.

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

br2.PNG Okay, seems I was able to print regular text.It isn't perfect, but it seems that if you add 0x4040 before ASCII text in a game string it can print the text just fine, except that it adds a space at the beginning. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that you guys were limited to S-JIS text.I ju...

Re: Brandish 2 Renewal Translation Project

Hello everyone.I posted nearly a year ago about some hacking attempt on Brandish 3,but real life issues made me stop all these months. I managed to find the decompression routines for both formats used, which are the same as Brandish 2. I found them on some files related to the Hoot music player, and ...

Re: Introduction

Ah,so I assume you already got the decompression routine figured out for Brandish 2 Renewal then? I was able to do some "compressor" for some of those BZH files. It doesn't actually compress anything, but at least the game reads it without modifying anything else. There's also the matter than it won't...

Introduction

Hello everyone, and thank you for translating awesome Falcom games for non japanese speakers like me. I am really interested in the Brandish 2 Renewal project,as I have been doing some research on Brandish 3 on my spare time. Both games use the same compression format, and I think that the base engine ...
